A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form. The purpose of Root canal treatment is to remove the bacteria that have penetrated through the nerve of the tooth and debride any and all infected tissue to create a healthy and sterile environment which is then filled with sterile material called gutta purcha. After root canal treatment, a full coverage crown is necessary to prevent future fracture of the tooth by providing adequate protection. Extracting the tooth may initially seem to the least expensive treatment, but if a root canal is an option, it may end up being less expensive than extracting and replacing that same tooth with a partial denture, bridge or a dental implant which is much more costly. Nonetheless, all of your treatment options will be discussed prior to starting any treatment.
